OUR SERVICES
FRAMING
Penland Custom Frames believes that every piece of artwork or object that comes through the door should be treated with respect. To that end, we give all our creativity and craftsmanship. From the usual to the unusual, from a poster to a Picasso, it’s our desire to serve you with creativity, professionalism and the honesty we’re known for.
MUSEUM ARCHIVAL
The staff at Penland Custom Frames is trained in the latest techniques of archival framing. We continually study and learn the best ways to preserve your art. We offer conservation/museum grade in all options of framing. Several local museums and galleries trust Penland Custom Frames with their valuable work and we hope you will as well.
MIRRORS
At Penland Custom Frames, mirrors have become one of our largest-growing requests. We offer any size, most shapes, and many finishes. We welcome your imagination. Any number of traditional, as well as contemporary styles, are available.
SPECIAL SERVICES AND FINISHES
One of the services for which Penland’s is best known is the art of shadowboxing. Realizing that items requiring a shadowbox are some of the most special, the entire staff is involved in creating boxes of unique design and distinction. Please ask us about the protection and display of your treasured pieces!

When the finish really matters, our staff is there to guide you. From rustic to lacquered finishes, genuine gold leaf to common leaf finishes, hand-oiled to hand-rubbed, we have them all. Our knowledge of gilding, antiquing, painting, and woodworking can provide custom finishes to complement any work of art.

PENLAND CUSTOM FRAMES TEAM

Noni Penland founded the shop in 1996 and has been framing pictures for more than 45 years. She has always loved color, style, and design. That combination has given her a unique view and ability to create. Her greatest love is people and she is a joy to all who know her.

John Poss, the shop's owner since February 2024, has been framing for Penland's since 2014 and has been a custom picture framer for more than 16 years. He enjoys the precision and attention to detail that handling fine art requires and appreciates the confidence that our customers place in us when they trust us with their treasured possessions.

Dianne Ellis has been with Penland Custom Frames since 1998. She graduated from Mercer University with a BA in Art and finds framing a natural extension of an artist. Her abilities as a restorationist, calligrapher, and engineer make her invaluable. Dianne is focusing more on her art career these days, but still does some of the artistic and creative framing projects that she enjoys.

Mina Penland Fuller has been a joyous and creative team member for more than 8 years. Usually the first to arrive, her warm smile and taste in music get us going. She has a great eye for design and is also a retired performing artist, having worked as an actor for many years.

Katie Armistead, the newest member of our group, has nearly 40 years of framing experience. She is also an artist and a retired art teacher who worked in the Guilford County School System.

William Lewis is our helper who reminds us to live one day at a time and inspires thoughtful conversations. His laughter is contagious!

Nikki Dale-Oaster rounds out our band of characters as our bookkeeper and the final word!

COMMUNITY

Since the doors opened, Penland Custom Frames has been dedicated to supporting the Arts. Opera, museums, music, and the theater nourish any community, and we are proud contributors to their continuing success. Penland Custom Frames believes in honoring and helping those members of the community who are less fortunate than we are.
