What kinds of items do you frame?
We frame original artwork, photographs, prints, diplomas, mirrors, objects, jerseys, needlework, family heirlooms, all sorts of memorabilia, shadowboxes, and much more. If it’s meaningful to you, chances are we can frame it.

At Penland, every project is designed and completed in-house using specialized glazing, archival materials, and framing methods suited to the piece. Whether you’re framing a diploma or an irreplaceable heirloom, the focus is always on protecting it and presenting it beautifully.
How do you protect valuable or irreplaceable artwork?
We use museum-grade conservation materials and methods designed to protect valuable and irreplaceable pieces for the long term. These include 99% UV-filtering glass or acrylic, 100% acid-free rag matting, and reversible archival mounting techniques that avoid permanently altering or damaging the artwork. Our experienced framers understand the glazing, mounting, and structural support required for museum-level preservation.
Can you frame oversized artwork?
Yes. Large and oversized custom framing is one of our strengths. Penland keeps specialty materials in stock, including jumbo sheets of conservation and museum glass, extra-large archival matting, deep-rabbet mouldings, and heavy-duty inner strainers. We regularly frame large-scale artwork, mirrors, textiles, maps, and other substantial pieces. For especially large or unusual projects, you’re welcome to call ahead. What if my project isn't a typical framing job?
That's where custom framing shines. Our team regularly works with pieces that require creative design, specialized mounting, conservation materials, custom shadowboxes, or other unique solutions. If you're not sure whether something can be framed, bring it by—we'll be happy to discuss the possibilities.
What if I’m not completely happy with my finished framing?
We want you to be happy with your framed piece. If you have a concern or are dissatisfied for any reason after taking it home, please contact us. We’ll be glad to take another look and do everything we can to ensure you’re happy with the finished result.
What is conservation framing?
Conservation framing uses archival materials and techniques designed to help preserve artwork, photographs, and other cherished items. It's especially recommended for original artwork, family heirlooms, and anything you want to preserve for the future.
What are conservation glass, Museum Glass, and acrylic glazing?
Conservation glass and Museum Glass both help protect artwork from harmful UV light. Museum Glass also offers exceptional clarity and greatly reduces reflections. Acrylic glazing is a lightweight, shatter-resistant alternative to glass, making it especially useful when size, weight, or breakage is a concern. Penland stocks conservation glass and Museum Glass in a full range of sizes, along with acrylic glazing options including Optium Museum Acrylic—a premium conservation-grade acrylic offering 99% UV protection, exceptional clarity, reduced reflections, and a durable, anti-static surface.
Can you frame needlepoint, jerseys, textiles, and memorabilia?
Absolutely. We frame cross-stitch, needlepoint, embroidery, samplers, and other needlework, and we create custom shadowboxes for jerseys, medals, memorabilia, keepsakes, collectibles, textiles, sculptures, and other three-dimensional items. We have extensive experience mounting and framing delicate textiles, such as silk scarves and christening gowns.
Do you frame items with sentimental value?
Every day. Whether it's a child's artwork, a wedding invitation, a military uniform, a family photograph, or a treasured heirloom, we understand that these pieces are irreplaceable and treat them with the care they deserve.
Can you help with mold- or fungus-affected artwork?
Yes. Penland Custom Frames offers specialized treatment for eligible paper-based artwork, photographs, and documents affected by mold or fungus. Our off-site sealed treatment chamber deactivates mold and fungal spores, helping prevent further growth before the item is framed or preserved.
What is custom framing?
Custom framing means your frame is designed specifically for your piece. We'll help you choose the right frame, matting, and glass to complement your piece while protecting it for years to come.
Can you help me choose a frame?
Of course! Choosing a frame is one of the best parts of the process. We'll guide you through frame styles, mat colors, and glass options to find a design that complements your piece and your space.
How long does custom framing take?
Turnaround time varies depending on the project and materials selected. We'll give you an estimated completion date when you place your order.
Can I drop off or pick up outside your regular hours?
We're open Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. If those hours don't work for your schedule, give us a call. We're happy to make arrangements for drop-off or pickup outside our posted hours.
Do you sell artwork?
No. We specialize exclusively in custom picture framing. Our focus is helping customers showcase and protect the artwork and items they already love.
